What does .si mean? Slovenia and “SI” in AI
.si is the internet country code of Slovenia. It has no official link to artificial intelligence, but in AI circles “SI” is used as shorthand for superintelligence, and in autumn 2026 that drew attention to the domain. Here is what is documented and what is not.

What `.si` is: Slovenia's country domain
The IANA root zone database lists .si as a country-code top-level domain sponsored by ARNES, the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia, with a registration date of 1 April 1992 (IANA record). The two letters are Slovenia's ISO country code.
Today the domain is operated by Register.si, the national .si registry. Registration goes through registrars: on its homepage, when we looked on 5 October 2026, the registry listed 94 active registrars and 303,352 registered .si domains. Those figures change daily.
Where the “superintelligence” shorthand comes from
In AI discussions, “SI” is a common abbreviation for superintelligence, a hypothetical AI that surpasses human ability. Domain investors noticed that .si spells it. In June 2026 Domain Name Wire analysed 35 public .si sales from January to early June and noted that some people promote .si as shorthand for superintelligence; its main finding was that investors, not end users, made nearly all of those purchases (Domain Name Wire, 11 June 2026).
That is the whole origin: a naming coincidence between a country code and an abbreviation. We found no statement from ARNES or Register.si that .si stands for superintelligence, and it does not: it is Slovenia's country code.
What happened in September 2026
According to Foreign Policy, President Donald Trump told the UN General Assembly on 22 September 2026 that AI would be called “super intelligence” in official US documents, saying “welcome to the new world of super intelligence—SI” (Foreign Policy, 28 September 2026). Netcraft reports that an executive order on 29 September directed US federal agencies to use “SI” and “super intelligence” in place of “AI” (Netcraft, 1 October 2026).
Registrations of .si domains rose sharply afterwards. Netcraft, citing Register.si statistics, reports about 13 times as many registrations in September as in August, with 13,603 registered in a single 24-hour period on 1 October. Foreign Policy cites ARNES figures of more than 6,000 registrations in the two days after the speech.
One Slovenian outlet, Siol, dated the first announcement to 19 September (Siol, 30 September 2026). We found no second source for that date, so we use the dates from Foreign Policy and Netcraft.
We take no position on the politics. We mention the event only because it explains the sudden attention, and because you will see these figures quoted elsewhere.
The aftermarket: asking prices are not sales
Siol reports that some owners are asking millions of dollars for .si names, and that Register.si said speculation about Slovenia earning millions from the interest has no real basis, because the registration fee does not change with demand. Listing a name at a price is not the same as selling it: do not read asking prices as market values.
On 4 October 2026 the marketplace Atom.com announced weekly auctions dedicated to .si names, starting on 6 October, saying in its own words that the market is still taking shape (Atom.com). We do not know how prices will develop and make no prediction.
What this means for you
- `.si` is not an AI domain. It is Slovenia's code. The superintelligence reading is a convention among people who use the abbreviation.
- Attention can fade. A domain is a long-term address, so choose it for the name you want to keep, not for a news cycle.
- Technically it is an ordinary domain. Anyone can register one, and it works with any host and any email provider. See Who can register a `.si` domain?.
- It has trade-offs. In particular Google treats
.sias a country domain; read the comparison in `.si` vs `.ai`, `.io` and `.com`.

Why the numbers you read differ
Figures for the total number of .si domains differ between sources because they were published on different days: about 219,800 on 29 September in Foreign Policy, 228,467 in Siol's article of 30 September, and 303,352 on the Register.si homepage on 5 October. They are snapshots of a number that was changing quickly, not disagreements. When you quote one, quote its date, and prefer the registry's own statistics.
