Transferring or selling a .si domain

Two different things get called a transfer. Moving your domain to another registrar changes who looks after it. Selling it to someone else changes who owns it. The .si registry treats them separately, and so should you.

Two different operations

  • Change of registrar: you stay the holder, a different company manages the domain for you. The registration period is not changed by it.
  • Change of holder: another person or company becomes the holder, the legal owner of the registration. This is what a sale is.

Both are described in the registry's general terms. Everything below is general information, not legal advice; if a sale involves a lot of money, a contract or a dispute, talk to a lawyer.

Moving to another registrar

According to the general terms, a holder may change registrar during the registration period (sections 6.3.1 and 6.3.3), and doing so does not alter the registration period. You do not lose the time you already paid for.

The registry's terms are the baseline; the registrar adds its own technical conditions. Our registrar platform, Openprovider, states that to transfer a .si domain out it must be at least 60 days old and unlocked, and you need an authorisation (EPP) code from the current registrar (Openprovider: .si domains). Other registrars may have their own requirements, and we have not verified how the registry itself enforces the 60 days.

  1. Check the expiry date. Renew first if it is close, so the transfer does not collide with quarantine (see price, renewal and expiry).
  2. Ask for the authorisation code and make sure the domain is unlocked.
  3. Note down your current DNS records. Moving the domain does not always move the DNS zone with it.
  4. Start the transfer at the new registrar using the code.
  5. Compare the DNS records afterwards and check that your site and email still work.

Transferring out is not self-service in the DomainSpace dashboard yet. If you want to move a domain registered with us, contact support and say which domain and where you want to move it. We will tell you what is possible and how long it takes before you do anything else.

Moving a domain in

The DomainSpace ordering flow registers new names only; it has no option for transferring an existing .si domain in.

Selling or giving the domain to someone else

The general terms say a holder may transfer the domain to a third party, by agreement between the parties or by a court order, and that the existing registration period is preserved (sections 6.4.1 and 6.4.5). In practice a sale has three parts that are easy to mix up:

  • The agreement and the payment between buyer and seller. This is between you two, not the registry; consider an escrow service or a written agreement for anything valuable.
  • The change of holder at the registrar, so that the buyer's details replace yours. How a registrar carries this out is its own process: ask your registrar before you agree a date with the buyer.
  • The DNS and the content. The domain name does not include your website or mailboxes. Plan when the buyer's records replace yours.

Hand over an authorisation code only once the agreement and the payment are settled, because the code lets the other party move the domain to their own registrar.

Where to find a buyer

You can sell a name wherever buyers look, whether that is a marketplace, a broker or a direct message. Listing a name at a price is not the same as selling it. A marketplace on DomainSpace is planned but is not available yet, and nothing in this guide depends on it.

Checks before you sell or transfer

  • You are the registered holder, and the holder details are current.
  • The domain is not about to expire or in quarantine.
  • The domain is unlocked and you have the code, if you are changing registrar.
  • You have exported your DNS records.
  • You have decided what happens to email on the domain, and told the people who use it.
  • You have the buyer's or new registrar's instructions in writing, so there is a record of what was agreed and when.

Ready to look for a name?

Search for a .si name. If it is free, registering takes a few steps and the price is shown upfront.

Tip: you can check up to 10 names at once, separated by spaces, commas or new lines.
